Nurse Shortages in Canada: Vacancies Tripled Since 2016 - StatCan Report (2025)

A critical shortage of healthcare workers is a growing concern in Canada, with a recent Statistics Canada report revealing a significant rise in vacancies for nurses and personal support workers.

Between 2016 and 2024, the vacancy rate for health-related occupations nearly tripled, reaching an alarming 5.8%. Nurses and personal support workers are particularly affected, with licensed practical nurses facing a vacancy rate of 12.8%.

But here's where it gets controversial: despite the higher vacancy rates in remote areas, the hourly wages offered to registered and licensed practical nurses in these regions are slightly higher than in urban centres. So, why are these positions still vacant?

The report also highlights an interesting contrast: while the number of doctors in Canada has nearly tripled since the 1970s, outpacing population growth, many Canadians feel access to healthcare has worsened. Paul Kershaw, a UBC professor and lead author of a separate report, attributes this to the surge in demand due to an aging population and inadequate revenue collection from boomers when they were younger.

And this is the part most people miss: retirees use roughly four times more medical care than adults under 50. As boomers entered high-demand age groups, the patient load increased dramatically, but not as fast as the number of doctors.

Despite the growth in physician numbers, doctors are working fewer hours than in the 1970s. Paul Kershaw compares the situation to a concert with tripled ticket booths but reduced opening hours.

The Canadian Medical Association reports that doctors in Canada work 20% more hours than the average Canadian, with family doctors working 52 hours per week, specialists 53 hours, and surgeons 62 hours. Over half of Canadian doctors reported burnout, and nearly half planned to reduce their hours during the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, what's the solution? How can we address this critical shortage and ensure adequate healthcare access for all Canadians? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments; let's spark a conversation on this important issue.
