According to SEF, around 21,500 foreigners can automatically renew their residence permits (AR) using the Automatic Renewal feature, available in the "Personal Area" of the SEF portal.

A SEF source told Lusa that 6,000 foreigners with a residence permit for investment activity, known as the golden visa, which expires until March 31, can also access this feature, being the first time that this type of visa has been renewed. AR can be done automatically over the internet.

This measure of automatically renewing residence permits, which lasts for two years, came about in July 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with more than 200,000 automatic renewals having been carried out.

“Aware of the difficulties, the Government has been adopting measures that allow expired documents, related to the stay in the national territory, to continue to be considered valid in the national territory until December 31, 2023, and after that date, upon proof of scheduling, for its renewal”, SEF also mentions, specifying that all documents and immigrant visas that have expired in the meantime are considered valid until the end of the year.

O SEF disponibiliza, a partir de hoje, a funcionalidade de Renovação Automática para as cerca de 21.500 autorizações de residência que caducam entre 1 de janeiro e 31 de março de 2023.

I have read two articles on this topic from Portugal News and am still confused. The writing style here is... convoluted, to say the least. I understand that some visas can be renewed online now? But which ones? All visas or just Goldens? For a short period of time or from now on? Please revise and clarify. Thank you.

It sounds nice, but when I try to use this feature the website responds "Not available for your permit, make an appointment."
Has it worked for anyone else?

I have been trying to get an appointment with SEF for several months. The phone number is always busy, the online appointment service doesn't work or won't let me, other SEF phone numbers i call; they tell me i should call or make the appointment online and when they finally respond to my email they tell me they don't make appointments by email i should call them to make the appointment! I am so frustrated by this it's ridiculous. Does anyone have any idea how to get an appointment?
