This expenditure has seen a notable increase since 2022, highlighting the rising cost of living. Despite this, households managed to save an average of CHF1,736 per month, which is a significant portion of their income.
But here's where it gets controversial: not all households were able to save. Lower-income households, particularly those with gross incomes below CHF4,839, often found themselves spending more than they earned. This is largely due to the high proportion of retired individuals in this category, who rely on their assets to supplement their income.
Compulsory expenditure: a significant chunk. Compulsory expenses accounted for a substantial 30.5% of gross income in 2023. This includes taxes, social insurance contributions, health insurance premiums, and even alimony payments. These expenses leave a significant dent in household finances, with taxes alone taking up an average of 12% of gross income.
Income sources: a diverse mix. On average, earned income made up the bulk of household income at 73.6%. Pensions and social benefits contributed 20.8%, while income from assets played a minor role at 4.5%. Cash transfers, such as alimony or other financial support, made up the remaining 1.1%.
The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) defines disposable income as the gross income of a household after deducting compulsory expenses. It includes the income of each household member, encompassing salaries, allowances, social benefits, transfers from other households, and income from assets.
