Ever watch Star Trek and question the decisions of the iconic series' many captains? Well, here's your chance to step into their shoes and try captaining a crew of your own. The only caveat is you'll have to assume the role of one of six captains handpicked from throughout Star Trek history before you begin your head-to-head quest. Beyond that, the journey you take in Star Trek: Captain's Chair, the new officially licensed deckbuilder that pulls from all corners of the franchise's far-reaching galaxy, is down to you.

Created by David Turczi and Nigel Buckle - the same minds behind Voidfall and the Imperium Series - Star Trek: Captain's Chair will be released in Q4 2024 but can be pre-ordered now at WizKids for $59.99 through the link in the box below. Each of the six captains comes with an asymmetric deck, the cards included encapsulating each of their personalities and leadership styles.

While the cards included in your deck will dictate part of how you play, your decisions and the common cards you draft will also play key roles and ensure that even if you were to select the same captain's deck in back-to-back games, each of those playthroughs will be different. You will need to balance diplomacy, exploration, and science on your quest to beat your opponent who will be doing the same thing with their opposing captain, and whoever strikes that balance best will be victorious.

Already generating excitement among Star Trek fans months ahead of its release, there's only one complaint certain people have with Captain's Chair so far, and that's the selection of captains included. While Picard is in there, Kirk is not, and there are some other notable names missing from the line-up. There's a good reason for that, however, and it's very good news. Captain's Chair co-creator David Turczi has explained that if this deckbuilder is as popular as everyone hopes it's going to be, more captain options will be added via expansions and future versions of Captain's Chair.

That means more editions of Captain's Chair, and perhaps expansions for this base version, are in the offing if this version sells well, and judging by the buzz surrounding its reveal, it won't struggle to sell well enough for it to have an exciting future. If you've placed your pre-order and you need something to pass the time between now and Captain's Chair's release, there are plenty of Star Trek tabletop games out there, and we've got a guide detailing the best ones.
